What is Exam4 exam software?
Examinees handwrite nothing else in their lives—except exams.
Graders struggle as legibility worsens.
The decline of handwriting
is a major source of stress on essay exams.
But letting examinees write exams on laptops brings challenges: How to control what can be accessed on the computer or over the network? How to collect, process and manage hundreds of electronic exam files? The answer has remained pen and paper.
With Exam4, Extegrity offers a well-established system for exams on laptops. The software, purpose-built for high-stakes essay exams, takes the necessary control of examinee computers and creates a secured, offline workspace for exam answers.
With Exam4, examinees type exams;
graders receive uniform, legible papers.
Examinees type and edit the way they prefer—on their own laptops. Exam4 blocks disallowed material, protects with frequent autosaves and backups, and streamlines file collection, management, printing and distribution. Exam files are encrypted for security.
Long-form high-stakes essays are typical in the study of law, and Exam4 has been part of a standard procedure used in law schools / lawyer licensing across the USA/Canada, on millions of exams since 2001.
Today, an increasing variety of institutions are moving ahead with trials and adoption worldwide. Students / Examinees: Perhaps you know someone who has used Exam4. Instructors / Administrators: You may already have read about Exam4 on forums and email lists, or heard about us from colleagues.
Exam4 requires only minimal setup for each series of exams. The software is self-contained with no network access required during sessions. Questions are handed out the old-fashioned way—on paper—retaining most existing administrative and security procedures.
Download > click, click > begin exam
Examinees download their per-institution customized version of Exam4 from our website in advance. Installation is just a couple of clicks. A practice exam is recommended, and our excellent user support is standing by.
In what we call "closed" mode exams, examinees cannot access materials on the network, Internet, or even on their local hard drive. Network access is re-established at the end of the exam to allow file submittal.
Essential word-processing features are provided, but with only minimal formatting, reducing distraction. Exam4 autosaves every 10 seconds.
End > exit > collect
Examinees step through the exit sequence and submit their files into our cloud server. A receipt is returned to the laptop, and files are ready for processing. If network access fails (or isn’t provided), a patent-pending procedure allows late submittal with full security.
Decrypt > print
Files are automatically decrypted, printed to PDF, and ready for you to retrieve. Print to paper or mark on-screen with any PDF annotation app.
